Brief Personality: Often manic, sometimes silly, ever curious, but truly frightening when angry. He still loves humanity, and enjoys is brilliant people, but he's reluctant to let them get close. It wouldn't be safe for them.
He sometimes wishes the War *could* have ended another way, but he's utterly certain it *was* the only way. Guilt over his actions is a luxury his younger selves might have allowed themselves, but he can't, not anymore. He's one of the only two Time Lords left, and it's up to them to keep the universe going. He can't flinch from that duty. He's just glad he doesn't have to face the universe alone. That, he can't imagine. |

Brief History: The War had been going badly. He'd been captured by the Daleks, and he was almost sure he was about to be exterminated, but he wasn't only Time Lord captured in that battle. He was surprised to see the Master, because he'd been dead the last time he checked. They decided to lay aside their differences for the moment and fight their way free together. The idea of a continued alliance to win the War was oddly seductive, but it wasn't easy. They fought over almost every detail, but there was no denying their tactics were better when they finally agreed on them. He found himself in more and more ethically troubling situations, and arguing less and less as the Master took leeway to do what needed to be done. This was the whole of creation at stake, after all.
But despite all the terrible things they did to stop the Daleks, nothing seemed to turn the tide of the war permanently to the Time Lords' favor. Finally he realized he had to do the unthinkable - use the Eye of Harmony to wipe the Daleks out, even if that meant undoing the existence of Gallifrey. The Master tried to stop him, arguing that it might destroy the entire universe, and (more importantly) them with it. The Doctor wasn't sure they would survive, either. But they did. It was like a whole new universe had been handed to him, one free from the arbitrary constraints of his people. |
