Brief Personality: He's brilliant, charming, ambitious, and arrogant. He's pretty sure he used to be crazy. Or maybe he's finally lost his mind for good. It's hard to tell. Is it possible to fall in love with an entire *planet*? | ||
Brief History: The Master's died a lot. But as long as he keeps getting to come back, that's all right, isn't?
He always knew he was destined for greatness. At the age of eight, he looked into the Untempered Schism, and saw eternity. It was wonderful. And awful. He came away with the certainty that the universe, as beautiful as it is, is harsh and uncaring. What could rules and morality mean against that terrible vastness? He also came away with the drums in the head, the never-ending drum beat. He spent the rest of his life trying to gather power to himself, driven on by the drums in his head. Power and survival seemed like the only thing that mattered. But the Doctor kept getting in his way. Alright, so he kept drawing the Doctor into his plans. He may have been a little obsessed with Doctor. Ok, definitely obsessed, and he's accepted that's never going to change. So, his grandiose schemes never worked for long. And he kept dying. He ran out regenerations, but he found a way to keep himself going. He hoped to find a way to live forever. Until the Daleks exterminated him. By all the laws of nature and his people, that should have been it for him. But they brought him back. The Time Lords needed his ruthlessness, his drive to take out everything that stood in his way. Which he thought was really funny. He had a new lease on life, and getting revenge on the Daleks seemed like a really good idea at the time. He's still not sure he could explain what happened during the War, not even to the Doctor. Looking back, he can see moments that lead him to this point. He remembers running into the Doctor, and realizing his chances of survival were better if they worked together. He remembers that as the war got worse and worse, the drums got worse and worse. He remembers seeing the Doctor break, and knowing he helped cause it. He remembers, instead of feeling triumphant, prying the disruptor ray from the Doctor's hands, because one well aimed shot to the head could do enough damage to arrest the regeneration process and take the Doctor away forever. He remembers resolving never to feel the terror and despair he felt in that moment ever again. He remembers accepting the Doctor's offer to get rid of the drums, and the amazing feeling of having only his own thoughts in his head. He remembers the shock and awe he felt, realizing that the Doctor really was going to destroy Gallifrey, if that's what it took. Most of all the Master remembers the tremendous joy and love he felt as the as the Doctor told him to think of it as a whole new universe, just for them - one they could make better, if they dared. The curious elation he felt as he realize that if he could let himself *believe* in what the Doctor was saying, he could have everything he ever wanted. He felt reborn all over again. They've chosen a long, difficult road to their goals, but it's tremendously satisfying. Right now he presents himself as Harold Saxon, Minister of Defense. The Minister who brought Torchwood fully under the thumb of the government. The man who saved the Earth from the invading Sycorax. He's not quite ready to run for Prime Minister yet, but he will be very soon. It's odd right now, playing at being human so much, watching all these short lived, short-sighted, self-involved peoples of the Earth, all around him. But they're also resourceful, cunning, creative, tenacious, and simply . . . amazing. Most of all they're *his*, like the Doctor is his. He's going to take them to full potential. Sometimes the depth of his feelings now frighten him a little bit, and he's not sure what to do. He can't help but shove the Doctor away until he's regained his equilibrium, when he gets like that. |
