Brief Personality: intelligent, bright, brittle around the edges, manic, more than a little crazy, verging on the edge of insanity, relies entirely more than he likes on Jack, proud of Jack and Torchwood, and wondering why he's feeling so damned proud of humanity when they haven't done all that much - though he still hates the British Prime Minister, and has no intention of letting that grudge go. Ever. | |
Brief History: He was human, at the end of the universe, and ran into a man named Jack Harkness. Jack asked about his watch, and helped him to regain his true nature. He, after much debate with himself, decided to take Jack along when he fixed the ex-Time Agent's wrist-band. Not because he was feeling generous, but because he knew Jack had traveled with the Doctor (stories are useful to listen to), and he knew Jack was a fixed point in space-time. He thought it might be useful to have Jack on his side, not the Doctor's.
Unfortunately, he didn't have the technology to really do a good job at fixing the band, and they ended up in London, 1889, stuck with a burned-out Vortex Manipulaor. He was not amused, and he sulked for the better part of a week. Then he started planning. If he was stuck here, he was bloody well going to make the best of it, and see what he could do to make humanity a force he could use against the universe. In 1908, he got his hands on a piece of alien transportation technology, and began to tinker with it, just to see what he could do with it. He founded a small company called Masterworks in 1911, building engines for planes for now. He expanded it over the next thirty years, with some difficulties during the Depression of the 1930s, but he kept it afloat. In 1941, while he was inspecting the prototype to a plane he was working on, at the Masterworks hanger just outside London, a German bomb landed on them. He was injured badly enough to need to regenerate, and he wouldn't let go of Jack's hand while he did. As he settled into his new regeneration, with the drums nearly silent, he firmly assigned blame for the destruction of his work, and the loss of his former regeneration before he'd gotten nearly as much time out of it as he'd hoped, on the British Prime Minister. Despite it being a German bomb, and a war going on that was started by someone else. He found that his current regeneration is very good at holding a grudge. He was disconcerted by a new-found care for the fate of humanity, and a strong physical attraction to Jack. He's fairly certain it's due to Jack being around when he regenerated, but at the same time, he wouldn't have it any other way. In the 1950s, he first took notice of Torchwood, though he dismissed it initially as something relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and not a factor in his plans. When he found them poking around one of his research facilities a decade later, he changed that assessment, and asked Jack to find out about them. In 1973, the Master walked into Torchwood, and offered his expertise and knowledge to help them with their greatest enemy - the Doctor. He decided to work his way up from a consulting specialist to Director, though he wasn't going to take too long. A few juicious rumours, one assassination, four years and several generous bribes later, he was Director. He took great care to make sure of Jack's career in Torchwood as well as his own, though he left the rest, even those he thought were interesting, to make their way up on their own merits. It's June 1994, and he's at his annual company retreat (for Masterworks), having dragged most of his research staff (leaving just enough to keep critical experiments running) on a cruise of the Mediterranean. He's stepped out of his cabin, and into an alleyway. He's not sure whether to be pissed off that he's not where he should be, or relieved that he doesn't have to listen to someone else fret about being away from the lab. |
