| "His comfort. He deserves that much, doesn't he?" |
| He rolled his eyes to the ceiling. "He deserves more than that. I'll talk to him. Or you can." |
| "I don't know what happened to him." |
| "HE died on the Game Station. Rose had the Time Vortex in her head. Used it to kill the Daleks and brought him back to the life, except she couldn't control it and brought him all the way back. He can't die, can't affect his own time line, can't ever stop existing. He's outside and at the center of everything." |
| "He is the vortex." |
| "I wouldn't say that. Just." He scratched through his hair. "Not right." |
| "Don't tell him that, you git." |
| "Already did." |
| "...You're a complete wanker, did you know that?" |
| He shrugged. "I wasn't the one who left him for dead." |
| "I didn't." |
| "Well, sort of. Little of both of us, really." |
| "Regenerating?" |
| He nodded. "Yup." |
| "So it's both of our fault. Why didn't you go back?" |
| "Better at running than confronting, and he feels wrong." |
| "Wrong how?" |
| "He's a fact!" |
| "So's Gal-that's the problem isn't it?" |
| He lifted his eyebrows, rocked on his heels a little, rolled his e yes and generally had a lot of complicated response that was mostly just twitch. "Yeah." |
| "You're an ass." he said sincerely. |
| "How long've you been you?" |
| "A month. How long have you been you?" |
| "For me what? Since most of Gallifrey burned or the last of it did? " |
| "Since you turned into you." |
| "Couple of years." |
| "How's that goin' for you?" |
| There were two answers there. The honest one and the one that wouldn't crack a version of himself who needed to believe, even right now, that he had a future. Even if it was a future as an ass.
Given how often he chose the truth, anyway, it wasn't all that hard to work out. "Not bad. You know, wibble and wobble here and there, but." |
| "But keep on traveling?" |
| "Oh, always. I've been to the end of the universe, and it was fantastic." |
| "Was it?" he asked curiously. |
| Removed from what was going to happen there.... 'Humanity's a beautiful thing. " |
| "Aren't they?" he beamed suddenly, "Forceful little things." |
| "Stubborn as all get out. Not even the universe ending can stop them." He grinned a little more honestly in response to the beam. |
| "What do they do?" |
| "Live." He grinned. |
| "Past the end of the universe?" |
| "Wait and see." |
| "No fair," he grinned though. |
| "It's perfectly fair!" he protested, through his own grin. |
| "You had to wait so so should I?" he scoffed. |
| "Give you something to look forward to." |
| "I'm looking forward to Jack right now," he said honestly. |
| "...Why're you lookin' forward to Jack?" |
| "Being trusted that much?" |
| "Heart, body and soul that man. " |
| "Exactly," The Doctor nodded, "I like the idea of deserving that." |
| He was stuck in a really awkward corner with that one. "Well. Good." |
| He raised an eyebrow, "Oh no." |
| "Oh, no what?" |
| "Do you need to tell me this?" |
| "To tell you what?" |
| "I'm not sure." |
| "There's nothing there to tell," he admitted. "Just that if I say you deserve it than I said I deserve it and that's pretty egotistical isn't it?" |
| He grinned, "Not sure that's a problem you usually have." |
| "Got it now, don't I?" |
| "Is it modesty or not wanting to compliment me?" |
| He opened his mouth and closed it again. "Not wanting to compliment you." |
| He snorted, then grinned, "Fair 'nough." |
| "Good. Whatever works. So, how'd you get here? Got the TARDIS?" |
| "Right out on main street. You?" |
| "Supply closet!" |
| "Really? Susan too." |
| "Susan came out of the closet? Well that is fantastic!" |
| The Doctor rubbed his forehead, "I need another drink." |
| He handed him one. |
| He threw it back, "I should find Susan. Or you should." |
| "One of us should find Jack, too," he admitted, reluctantly. |
| "Go find Jack. Talk to him." The Doctor nodded, then held out his hand to shake. |
| He squinted, a little. Took the hand and shook. "Not a good idea." |
| "Why not?" |
| "Your his Doctor, to me. Especially if he doesn't already have those answers." |
| "How's he still alive and I'll talk to him." |
