Brant almost smiled at the first part of that - the part about learning to fight through the crap - because it validated him, and just because. He stopped when Lane went on though. He wasn't capable of shutting down, not yet or really, but he got definitely had enough sense to get a little wary. "What's that?"
"On Libria. When people were executed - I was one of those who did the executing." He searched Brant's face for a reaction. "I've killed a lot of people."
His reaction was so complicated that it was almost impossible to untangle, even for him. Just emotional response flickering across his face and behind the brilliant blue of his eyes. Not all of it was positive. There was definite anger, and even disgust, but they were there and then gone in the amount of time it took him to blink, replaced by wariness and fear, and progressing all the way through calculating and thoughtful to realization, acceptance, and then right back to compassion.

It didn't last long, complicated and layered as the response was, and he didn't look away from Lane at all. There wasn't even a token effort to restrain his response. There probably wouldn't have been, under any circumstance, but processing that level of emotional response meant he was too busy feeling it to hide it.

"That actually makes a lot of sense," he said, once he'd figured it out. "Thanks for telling me."
"Yeah, well..." he half-smiled, letting his eyes close. "Thought you should know. Will you be here when I wake up?"
"I don't know," he admitted, and rubbed the back of Lane's neck with casual affection. "I was kind of keyed up to take on the universe today. I may go explore the corner I've landed in, but don't worry about me. Just light." ...He so had that wrong.
"Mmkay." He cracked one eye open. "Don't get into too much trouble." And he was out almost instantly, his last thought on Brant's hand on his neck.
He waited until he was both bored and every sure that Lane was sleeping before he slipped out of the room.

And he made sure to lock the door behind him.
