"No idea," he said brightly, "Relative to Rose, I mean. How long have you known her?"'
His brain was a bit scrabbled. |
"To be perfectly honest?" Adam asked after a moment of silence. He was a bad liar anyway, and now, with the Doctor being so nice to him, he actually felt bad about lying. "A few days." |
He raised an eyebrow, "Earth days?" |
"Earth days," Adam confirmed, bracing himself for any questions that would come now. |
The Doctor raised an eyebrow slowly, waiting for Adam to talk. |
Adam sighed softly at the expression. He was going to have to explain of his own free will, wasn't he?
"I screwed up," Adam said, a clear hesitation in his voice. |
"How?" |
"I tried to take information back with me." |
"To your time?" he scowled. |
Adam nodded slowly, "To my own time." |
"Why?" he stared at Adam. |
Adam stared back at the Doctor. He hadn't cared why before. He'd just...assumed that he knew all of the whys. Shaking out his head slowly, Adam sighed a bit, "I thought I could help," He said. "I mean...there was just...so much there. Even some of the smallest things could have fixed so many problems." |
"You know you could fracture time that way." |
"Well... I know that now. But it would have been helpful if someone had bothered to explain that before," Adam said, raising a hand to rub at the back of his neck. |
"I didn't?" The Doctor frowned, looking annoyed at himself. |
"The most you said to me was to stop asking question and run off," Adam said, raising a hand to run through his hair. "I think the exact wording was 'Go and find out and stop nagging me'." |
"...That's just...Weird." He frowned more. |
Adam frowned as well, shifting his hands into his pockets as he shrugged a bit. It didn't seem weird to him. It made perfect sense. "You didn't like me. Maybe you avoided explaining things so I would mess up, and you'd have an excuse to get rid of me?" |
"I don't like hearin' that." |
"I don't know what else to tell you," Adam said, glancing over at the Doctor. "You'd have to ask yourself to figure out what exactly you were thinking." |
"You sure you didn't do anythin'?" he asked a bit hopefully. |
"Not that I can think of," Adam said with a slight frown. "And besides, it's not like I'm going to list out every little thing I ever did in your presence so you can figure out just what it was that ended me up on your bad side." |
"Fair point," he shrugged, pointing Adam into the tea shop. |
Adam slipped into the tea shop, glancing around to take in the appearance of the place with a curious eye. Everything looked normal enough. It was rather unsettling. "Is it just me, or is this place just a little too...perfect?" |
"Wait until you see the night sky." |
"Doesn't this seem at all odd to you?" Adam asked, looking curious as he settled himself down at one of the tables, just looking everything over. "I mean, I don't know much about how time or reality works, but just...falling out of it seems like something that shouldn't happen, and much less when you end up in some type of...perfect little...zoo when you do." |
"Honestly?" he said after a thoughtful minute, "I've seen odder." |
"I don't doubt that," Adam said after a moment before standing to get himself a drink. "What's your pleasure?" |
"House blend," he shrugged. "You doin' okay so far?" |
Adam nodded as he worked to prepare two cups of tea, one for both of them, "I'm coping well enough," Adam said before glancing over at the Doctor. "What about you?" |
"It's a nice quiet time." he said after a moment. |
"So, a change from the usual?" Adam asked with a slight smile. |
"Bit yeah," he gave Adam a crazy grin, half buried in his own mind. |
