Toshiko had been slowly working her way through the library since she'd run into Yana there; she was still in the As mostly because she was going book by book, afraid she'd miss something important if she went skipping about the shelves.

"Now, let's see. Where was I?" she asked, trailing her fingers down the books. She almost wished for the alien reader device.
After a nice long nap, Romana decided to investigate the library the Doctor had told her about. She wandered in, and saw a young woman peering at the shelves, looking very focused. Romana thought she might be human.

Romana didn't want to startle her, so she waited to see if the young woman would turn around, before she introduced herself.
She reached the end of a shelf and turned to head back up the aisle when she saw the other woman watching.

"Hello," she said. "Not in your way, am I?"
"No. I just didn't want to startle you by trying to say hello when you were looking the other way. This library is rather larger then I expected," she looked around admiringly for a second.

Then she stuck out her hand. "Hello! I'm Romana."
"I probably would have jumped," Tosh admitted with a quick smile as she accepted Romana's hand. "Toshiko."
"Pleased to meet you, Toshiko. I'm a little rusty with my Earth languages. Is that Japanese?"
"It is," she said, studying her curiously. "Where are you from?"
"Gallifrey. Which is no where near Earth. I'd be truly surprised if you'd heard of it."
"No, I can't say that I have," she admitted.
"And you are from Earth, correct? I'd hate to assume, and not give you the chance to correct me."
"I am," she said with a smile. It was odd how easily those sorts of questions became commonplace. "Early twenty-first century."
"Most of my time visiting Earth was in the late 20th century, actually. Not too far off, in the larger scheme of things. But from my perspective, my visits were a long time ago," she smiled a little sadly.

"Have you been here long? I've been here for less then a day, still learning my way around."
"It's a bit hard to tell how much time has passed here," she said, then pointed back to the beginning of the shelf. "I started down there and now I'm ..." She found the book she was looking for, "... here. About two-thirds the shelf with one return visit home."
"A girl after my own hearts," Romana approved, "But...'One return visit home'? You've gone home and been pulled back?"
"Yes," she said with a nod. "I didn't remember being here when I was there, but as soon as I was here again, I remembered both places. And, I don't mean to be rude, but ... hearts? Plural?"
Romana filed that information away. That might not be true for Time Lords, due to their time sense, but it was to know until if and when she experienced a return trip.

"Oh, yes, my people have two. One for casual, one for best!"
"I have got to introduce you to Owen," Tosh murmured.
"Beg pardon?" Romana asked, not quite catching what Tosh had said.
"Sorry, sorry," Tosh said. "A friend of mine is a doctor. I'm sure you fascinate him."
"I'm not in the habit of letting human doctor examine me, sorry," she tried to say as nicely as possible. "Let them ask me a few questions, perhaps, but I loathe to be poked and prodded."
Toshiko grinned.

"Don't worry, I don't like them poking and prodding me much either."
"That's two things in common! I can see were are going to get along splendidly."
"You said you'd been here a day? Do you have any questions? Not that I know everything, but I could try to answer them."
Romana thought for a moment. "Not that it's really important, but do you know someone who calls himself the Doctor? I heard a theory that everyone here is connected him somehow, and was before they got here. I'm just testing it out."
"I do," she said, leaning against the bookshelf. "And I did meet him before, very briefly. But I know of at least one person here, maybe two who hadn't. Unless they didn't tell me."
"They might not have even known, even if they had met him. Hmm." She mulled it over while she inspected the nearest row of books.

"Well, I think I'm going to settle in for some light reading. It's been a while since I've had time to read for pleasure. But feel free to interrupt me! Sitting in absolute silence can be dull - I don't care what librarians say on the matter."
"Also possible," she admitted. She looked behind her at the books and smiled. "And I've got to figure out where I left off. I recommend those overstuffed chairs by the window as the most comfortable."
"Thank you, Toshiko."

She wandered up the S section, and fairly randomly pulled off the first volume of the collected works of Shakespeare. Wasn't this the Earth playwright the Doctor so often went on about? Time to find out what all the fuss was about.

Then she settled in a chair.
