The Doctor decided to go and get some food before actually talking to anyone else. He spotted a few familiar faces as he made his way over to the loaded tables and dealt out a few beaming smiles and a few waves, but mainly he was concentrating on the food.
And what a fantastic spread there was! He filled a plate and leaned back against the wall nearby to eat and watch the proceedings. |
Rose actually dressed up, did her hair up, and put on makeup that wasn't just mascara applied with a paint brush. She leaned against the wall next to the Doctor, "Should have known you'd find the food first." |
He grinned, still chomping on a chicken drumstick. "Food's good. And the Master's done us proud tonight!"
He swallowed his mouthful and looked round at her with an affectionate smile. "You look nice." |
"Thanks," she offered him a grin, then stole a crisp from his plate, "I didn't realize this many people were here." |
"Mmm, there's loads, isn't there? I didn't quite realise either. Didn't realise I knew quite so many, too." |
"You know everybody," she pointed out with an eyeroll, still grinning, "Five minutes in a room and it's all "Hullo, I'm the Doctor."" |
He pretended to look outraged. "I do not! I think you're getting me confused with someone called Jack." |
"I said meet, not flirt!" |
"Ohhhh, right." He grinned comfortably. "Yep, s'pose you have a point there. Not exactly backward in coming forward, am I?"
He popped a cocktail sausage in his mouth and mumbled, "How've you been, anyway?" |
"Pretty good," she smiled at him affectionately, "You?" |
"Um. Yeah. All right. Ish." He made a face. "Want to go home now. I'm fed-up and I miss the TARDIS." |
"Why fed up?" |
"Because I'm stuck here and there's nothing to do. No excitement, no drama, no dastardly villains to defeat - well, except the Master, apparently, though I haven't run into an evil version - and just. I don't do staying in one place."
He stopped, aware he sounded like a petulant child, and crammed half a donut into his mouth instead. |
She bit her lip against a smile, "I'm sorry, Doctor." |
He looked uncomfortable and flashed her a bright grin. "It's all right. I'm a big boy, I'll survive. I just need to find that magic door to get me home again!" |
"I don't think you're alone in wanting that." |
"Oh, I know. I think all the Time Lords here are going a bit stir-crazy. Good idea of the Master's, though, this," he added, gesturing widely round at the party with the chocolate he'd been about to pop into his mouth. "Give people a bit of excitement, something to enjoy and remember." |
"If we remember." |
"I meant while we're here. Something that's actually happened. Here. 'Cos, really, absolutely nothing actually happens here, does it? Yet here we are, making something happen. That's pretty wonderful, actually."
He looked a bit more cheerful. |
"You're so..." she trailed off, grinning. |
He waggled his eyebrows at her. "So... what?" |
"Weird," she decided, nodding and warm. |
"Thank you," he said solemnly, then gave her a big smile and a wink. "See you later. I'm going to find a drink." |
"Later," she waved casually. |
