Characters: Lucy Saxon, Jack Harkness

Lucy had found a beautiful red dress in a boutique that definitely hadn't been there the last time she went shopping. It was rather more revealing than anything she'd normally wear, now she was a respectable MP's wife, but Harry wasn't here, after all, and she felt she deserved a little fun.
It felt a little odd walking into the party on her own, she was so used to attending functions with Harry. She held her chin up high and headed for the bar and a glass of champagne. |
"Come here often?" Jack smiled, stepping around Lucy to stand beside her, looking at the crowd. |
"First time," she replied coquettishly, before registering the voice and turning her head to verify that it was indeed Captain Harkness. It wasn't the sort of greeting she'd have expected from him. Obviously this was a different version of him.
She tilted her head, and smiled at him, raising her glass in a toast. "Good evening, Captain." |
Jack raised his own glass and fished out the toothpick full of olives. Pulling off one with his teeth, he chewed it slowly.
"I'm sorry, you have me at a disadvantage. I don't think I've met you before." |
Lucy smiled. "You must get that a lot, with so many versions of you here." She held out her hand graciously. "Lucy. Lucy Saxon." |
"It's odd, I'll say that, Mrs. Saxon," Jack said, noticing the ring. "It is Mrs., isn't it?" |
"It is, but my husband's not here," she informed him with a smile. "At least, I don't think so. It's hard to tell, when there are so many men here who look like him."
She'd noticed at least three here, including the one she'd mistaken for Harry on the first day. |
"And that is?" Jack asked, glancing at her and then looking out at the faces beyond. He admitted he hadn't met too many of the variants here - including the ones he didn't recognize. |
"He seems to be known as the Master, generally," Lucy replied, wondering if that name would mean anything to him, since the name 'Saxon' hadn't. She pointed to the one she'd met before. "Over there in the long jacket, talking to the Doctor and - " she narrowed her eyes - "is that a young version of you?" |
Jack snorted and took a sip of his drink. "Seems so. Haven't met any of your husband."
He eyed the young version of himself for a moment before what she had said sunk in.
"The Master?" He asked incredulously, looking at her with eyebrows raised. |
Lucy smirked. "My husband is, apparently, human and called Harold Saxon. That one over there also goes by that name on Earth, but in reality he's an alien from Gallifrey and he likes to be known as the Master. Interestingly, they're both running for Prime Minister." |
"Well," Jack mused, smiling to himself. "Not sure how I'd feel about a Prime Minister called The Master." |
"Oh, I don't know. It seems rather appropriate. He certainly seems to be good at running things." Even if he didn't appear to need her in that reality.
Lucy tilted her head and considered the Captain. He looked different to the version of him she'd met upon her arrival, and it wasn't just the full uniform, dashing as it was. "So what's different in your reality, Captain? I assume you're with Torchwood?"
That seemed to be a constant across universes. |
"No, no Torchwood," he said, sipping his drink. "Volunteer for the RAF in World War II." |
"World War II?" Lucy frowned. "But, you couldn't have been alive then. You're not that old!" |
Jack leaned in, lowering his voice. "The trick is to moisturize."
Then he straightened and pulled up a sleeve. "And to have a gadget that lets you travel in time." |
Lucy's mouth fell open. "You can travel in time?" she echoed, awed, and gazed at the leather contraption strapped to his wrist. "May I?" she asked, glancing up at him, one hand already reaching out tentatively to touch. |
Jack held his wrist steady and flipped the leather cover open. "Think that's impressive? You should see my ship." |
"Your ship>?" She glanced up at him again, before stroking elegant fingers reverently over the leather, around the screen and controls. "So much I didn't know about you, Captain," she murmured. |
He leaned in again, voice almost a whisper. "That's not the half of it," he said, and raised his wrist, punching a few buttons.
Then he held it out at an angle and kept his eyes on her as he punched a new set of commands and a hologram picture of her floated in the air. |
Her pulse picked up at his nearness, at the seductive note in his voice, and when the hologram appeared, she caught her breath, eyes wide and girlish, hand reaching out as if to touch - and disappearing straight through the figure in the red dress. "Oh!" she gasped, and smiled up at him, entranced. "That's amazing!" |
Jack smiled at her wonder and flipped it closed once she'd looked her fill. "Care to dance, Lucy?" |
She set her glass down carefully and gave him a charming smile. "I would love to, Captain."
Well, the party had definitely got off to a perfect start. |
