He could hear the party before he saw it, low music and the murmur of conversation. His pulse quickened a bit - nothing like a party to get the blood flowing. His RAF uniform was nicely pressed and shoes freshly shined.
Sauntering in, he took a look around the room. Odd to see himself here and there, plus a few Doctors in the mix. Others he didn't recognize, but guessed he'd meet them soon enough.
Moving toward the bar, he planted a wide smile on his face and ordered a martini with plenty of olives. |
Estelle hadn't thought for a second about not attending, even if maybe she'd doubted she was sophisticated enough. There was music, there would be dancing, it could be just like a party at home.
She stepped in and looked around, wide-eyed and fresh in a lovely gown she'd found in one of the stores.
She saw the uniform first and smiled broadly as she approached the man.
"Hello captain." |
Jack turned and dipped his head in greeting. "Good evening! Having a good time?" |
"I've only just arrived," she explained. |
"Me too," Jack grinned, and took a drink of the martini. "Seems to be quite a crowd." |
"Yes, I don't think I knew there were this many people here!" she said, glancing at his drink then at the android behind the bar. |
"Would you like something? They don't charge. Something with alcohol? Maybe a wine?" |
"Well... I. Do you suppose they'd have champagne, for an occasion like this?" |
Jack grinned and stepped over to the bar, returning with a flute of champagne. He handed it to her with a flourish.
"Champagne for the pretty lady," he smiled. |
"Oh thank you!" she said, beaming and accepting the glass happily. "I haven't had champagne in ages." |
"What's your name?" Jack asked, head tilted. |
"Estelle Cole," she said and offered him her hand. |
Jack took her hand. "Captain Jack Harkness," he replied. "Been in town long?" |
"Back and forth," she said and laughed lightly. "I've met another you! A little older I think. It's sort of hard to tell." |
"Seems to be a lot of me around," Jack smirked. "Gives me the heebie jeebies." |
"I can imagine. I don't know what I'd do if I met another me." |
"Go see if you can find one," Jack said, gesturing at the crowd. "Mingle! Be merry!" He winked and saluted her with his glass, moving out toward the mass of faces - some familiar, some not. |
Estelle watched him move away, smiled, shrugged and decided she'd see if she couldn't find someone who would ask her to dance. |
